Josef Muller Brockman is…

Josef Muller Brockman was born on May 9, 1914, in Rapperswil and died on August 30, 1996. He studied architecture, design and the history of art at the university in Zurich. He is recognized for his simple designs and his clean use of typography. In 1936 he opened his Zurich studio specializing in graphic design, exhibition design and photography. He produced concert posters for the Tonhalle in Zurich. In 1958 he became a founding editor of New Graphic Design. In 1966 he was appointed European design consultant to Müller-Brockman was author of the 1961 publications The Graphic Artist and his Design Problems, Grid Systems in Graphic Design where he advocates use of the grid for page structure. Brockman’s modular grid system was used to keep the layout between all of the issues uniform. His first poster successes was with "Watch that Child!" for the Swiss Automobile Club and poster series for the Zurich Tonhalle. And in 1981 he Published "Grid Systems in Graphic Design."
