As I was reading the articles i was deciding between How Good is Good? and Rant, I decided to choose How Good is Good because the title alone interested me more than the others. I learned that design can make someone feel better, make the world a safer place, it can simplify or lives, it can help us remember, design can unify. In this article he talks a lot about how we can make good design in more then one way. We should help others, don't hurt anybody, and strive for happiness according to Stefan Sagmeister.
What are the advantages of a multiple column grid? You can align your text and images in a creative and more unique way. With multiple column variation there are more ways to create different layouts and organize your text. You can create Asymmetry and it gives you the opportunity to be less rugged, you can create different column widths.
How many characters is optimal for a line length? words per line? The satisfactory length of characters in a line range between 45-75 this includes spaces and letters. Make your type bigger or smaller to fit the column/grid.
Why is the baseline grid used in design? It helps to create a more unified page in connecting your images or text with one another.
What is a typographic river? The unattractive gaps or lines that are formed by the spaces between words in a paragraph. They are most noticeable with inter-word spaces because of monospaced fonts or full text justification. This happens when you don't have enough characters per line.
From the readings what does clothesline or flow line mean? A flow line is the horizontal line that guides your eyes through text. Elements that share across the spread to create unity.
How can you incorporate white space into your designs? You get white space by grouping things and by not putting text at the edges, keeping the white space to the outside.
What is type color/texture mean? It is the non-white space on the page. The density of text. If you have things leaded out and not bold, it will appear less dense.
What is x-height, how does it effect type color? It is the height of the X on a given typeface; the more consistent word spacing the better typographic color. The larger the X-height the darker the color.
In justification or H&J terms what do the numbers: minimum, optimum, maximum mean? It is the specific amount of space between words The minimum meaning the least possible, maximum meaning the most, and optimum meaning just right.
What are some ways to indicate a new paragraph. Are there any rules? There are very many ways to indicate a new paragraph: indent second line, tracking, hang indent, all caps, etc. Do not indent the first line of a paragraph
What are some things to look out for when hyphenating text? Mainly hyphens are used for hyphenating words and line breaks, but En dashes are used for time like hours, days, or years and Em dashes are changes in thought or where a period is strong and a comma is too weak.
What does CMYK and RGB mean? Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These are the only four colors used in producing full colored photographs and designs.
What does hanging punctuation mean? It is used when text is fully justified and is a way of typesetting punctuation marks and bullet points most commonly quotation marks and hyphens, so they don't disrupt the flow of a body of text.
What is the difference between a foot mark and an apostrophe? What is the difference between an inch mark and a quote mark (smart quote)? An apostrophe and quote mark have a similar circle and curve that make it present the quote or word ("" '). To make apostrophes and smart quotes you have to hit the the option +[ (left bracket is quote, right bracket is apostrophe). to make them go the other direction and add shift.
What is a hyphen, en dash and em dashes, what are the differences and when are they used?A hyphen is used for hyphenating words or line breaks like previously stated, it is found next to the equal sign on the keyboard. An En dash is used between words to indicate a duration of time like hours, days, months or years (there is a space en dash space). The short cut is option+hyphen. An Em dash is twice as long as the En dash, it is used in a similar manner to colon and parentheses, it indicates an abrupt change in thought.
What are ligatures, why are they used, when are they not used, what are common ligatures? Two or more letters that are grouped or 'tied' together, for example in some typefaces the 'fi' and 'oe' sequences overlapped which looks terrible.
