What makes a successful bookjacket?

Tips that I found:

Know your market.Use imagery and style that your market can relate too. You want to create a cover design that stylistically fits the genera, but stands out from competing titles.

Research. Check out book covers within and without your genera. Visit a book store or go online to Amazon.com. Observe how type and images are used. Why are some covers more appealing than others? Adapt what you like to your own cover.

Color. We respond to color or the lack of it before reading a book title. Color sets the mood of a book. Think about how you want to affect the viewer of your book cover.

Legibility. Primary to a successful cover design is a legibility title. To that end use large type and good color contrast. Use script type faces with caution, as they are hard to read.

Title scaling. For long titles or words it maybe helpful to condense them horizontally. This will result in tall skinny type that still can be set large. Keep the letter spacing open to maintain legibility.

Title placement. Typically a title is placed in the top 1/3 of the cover. It should not be obscured by a busy or a low contrasting background. If this is an issue, try placing a solid colored rectangle behind the tile.

Reverse type. Be cautious using white or reverse type at a small point size. The ink on solid backgrounds will spread and tend to fill in type under 12 points—particularly with a serif typeface.

Images placement. The main element of a image should be visible below the title and not interfere with the subtitle. The image may be framed within the cover or bleed off of the cover. A image can wrap around the spine and onto the back cover.

Subtitle placement. The subtitle follows the title and can be positioned left, right or centered. It’s placement is most often dictated by the image or graphic used. If necessary, it can be broken up to form more than a single line.

Endorsements/quotes. If you have a quote from a well-known person, it may be advantageous to place it on the front cover. It is typical to place it at the very top or bottom of the front cover. It can be high lighted by placing it within a color filled box.

3 books I am redesigning:
Nicholas Sparks books:
Dear John, A Walk to Remember, A Bend in the Road, Message in a Bottle

A little about the author: Nicholas Sparks was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on New Year's Eve, a scant eighty minutes prior to 1966. He is an internationally bestselling American author, writing novels with themes that include Christianity, love, tragedy and fate.

Dear John:
An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love—and face the hardest decision of his life.

A Walk to Remember:

Every April, when the wind blows from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister. A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood...

Message in a Bottle:

Thrown to the waves, and to fate, the bottle could have ended up anywhere. Instead, it is found just three weeks after it begins its journey. Theresa Osborne, divorced and the mother of a twelve-year-old son, discovers it during a seaside vacation from her job as a Boston newspaper columnist. Inside is a letter that opens with, "My Dearest Catherine, I miss you my darling, as I always do, but today is particularly hard because the ocean has been singing to me, and the song is that of our life together...." For Garrett, the message is the only way he knows to express his undying love for a woman he has lost. For Theresa, wary of romance since her husband shattered her trust, the message raises questions that intrigue her. Challenged by the mystery, and driven to find Garrett by emotions she does not fully understand, Theresa begins a search that takes her to a sunlit coastal town and an unexpected confrontation. Brought together either by chance or something more powerful, Theresa and Garrett's lives come together in a tale that resonates with our deepest hopes for finding everlasting love. Shimmering with suspense and emotional intensity, Message in a Bottletakes readers on a hunt for the truth about a man and his memories, and about both the heartbreaking fragility and enormous strength of love. For those who cherished The Notebook and readers waiting to discover the magic of Nicholas Sparks's storytelling, here is an achingly lovely novel of happenstance, desire, and the choices that matter most.

A Bend in the Road:

Miles Ryan's life seemed to end the day his wife was killed in a hit-and-run accident two years ago. Missy had been his first love, and Miles fervently believes she will be his last. As a deputy in the North Carolina town of New Bern, Miles Ryan not only grieves for Missy, but also longs to bring the unknown driver to justice. Then Miles meets Sarah Andrews. The second grade teacher of his son, Jonah, Sarah had left Baltimore after a difficult divorce to start over in the gentler surroundings of New Bern. Perhaps it's her own emotional wounds that make her sensitive to the hurt she first sees in Jonah's eyes, and then his father's.

Tentatively, Sarah and Miles reach out to each other. Soon they are both laughing for the first time in years . . . and falling in love. Neither will be able to guess how closely linked they are to a shocking secret -- one that will force them to question everything they ever believed in . . . and make a heartbreaking choice that will change their lives forever.

person's happiness more than your own, no matter how painful the choices you face might be."
Nicholas Sparks

"Nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy. Remember that."
Nicholas Sparks

"Without suffering, there'd be no compassion."
Nicholas Sparks

"Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Loves is never boastful or conceited. It is never rude or selfish. It dose not take offense and is not resentful. Love take no pleasure in others people's sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes."
Nicholas Sparks

“I'm miles from where you are / I lay down on the cold ground / And i, I pray that something picks me up / And sets me down in your warm arms”
Snow Patrol ft. Martha Wainwright

"Without you in my arms, I feel an emptiness in my soul. I find myself searching the crowds for your face - I know it's an impossibility, but I cannot help myself."
Nicholas Sparks

"And then I feel as if I'm witnessing a miracle, as ever so slowly she raises her face towards the moon. I watch her drink in the sight, sensing the flood of memories she's unleashed and wanting nothing more than to let her know I'm here. But instead I stay where I am and stare up at the moon as well. And for the briefest instant, it almost feels like we're together again."
Nicholas Sparks

"i..She was struck by the simple truth that sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary, simply by doing them with the right people..."
Nicholas Sparks

what i want: I want the look of my covers to be black and white mainly with one color, and tints and shades of that color. I want to focus on the image and feel; black and white has that sense of class and vintage which is where I want to go with my book cover series.
